"Officer, I got mad at my sister because she wouldn't give me the remote control." These are the words police officers hear today because parents are deciding they no longer want to be parents. According to the BBC, parents are having their kids arrested because they can't (or refuse) to assert their authority over such situations. As authority structures and God's design for the family erodes each day, men and women are looking to the state to "control" their children. It doesn't seem too far-fetched anymore to imagine a time where children will be taken from parents, raised in pods, and unleashed to the world as parentless drones of society. Could what was once thought of as mere science fiction become the norm of future society?
I read such things and can't help but be tempted to think our world is rapidly moving towards a steep decline. But then I remember John 16:33, where Jesus tells His disciples: "I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” The world is not in control, Jesus is. And no matter how much the world reflects a godlessness that appears inevitable, there is no such thing as godless inevitability in a God-created world. He holds this world in His hand and that is reassuring.
So we need not fear as Jesus mentioned to His disciples time and time again. He is the Immanuel, God with us God. And we will not be shaken even when it seems as though family structures are being torn asunder, God reigns over all.
